Servant Of The Gods
by Amy Wolff Sorter
ISBN: 1-59279-443-2 (Electronic)
ISBN: 1-59279-770-9 (Paperback)
When Devorah b’Shiri first lays eyes on Aryeh ben Abinoam, she sets in motion events leading to the ultimate survival of the Tribes of Israel...
The inspirational “Song of Deborah,” from the Book of Judges in the Bible, describes the victorious tale of how, against all odds, a rag-tag army commanded by Deborah and Barak conquers an extraordinarily powerful enemy force to lay claim to Israel and its people. Deborah's Song is one of courage, tenacity and divine intervention, from the defeat of hostile forces to the death of the Canaanite leader, Sisera, at the hands of Jael.
In Servant of the Gods, Amy Wolff Sorter goes beneath the legendary Biblical tale to focus on Deborah, the woman behind the divine myth. Set against the conflicted and violent backdrop of Ancient Israel, the novel details Deborah’s torturous road from her birthright as Canaanite priestess to her final destiny as a staunch defender of the Israelites; a female leader in a patriarchal society who, despite her own self doubts, is driven to use her incredible powers to save her people.

Read what the reviewers are saying...
"Amy Wolff Sorter has creatively combined the Biblical account of the prophetess, Deborah, with believable dialogue and character motivation. The result is an exciting novel, packed with powerful insights and memorable moments...the code of honor and the ethics of both the Israelites and the Canaanites are portrayed skillfully. The brutality of Baal stands in the background of this story and furnishes the motivation for the characters...the tension mounts with increasing action, and the climax of the book is nothing short of startling. Servant of the Gods is certain to capture readers!"—Joyce Handzo, In the Library Reviews
“Wolff Sorter goes to the roots of the Song of Deborah, steps into her shoes and breathes life into the story…her writing grabbed me from the very start and never let me go as I hungrily devoured page after page…the story is bold, the delivery done with sure, solid, visionary prose from a talent that is nothing less than phenomenal.”—DeborahAnne MacGillivray, author of A Restless Knight and Invasion of Falgannon Isle
Read a short excerpt...
...Swallowing hard and taking a deep breath, I slowly got to my feet, holding out my hands to show them devoid of weapons. I raised the veil from my face then, deliberately meeting his eyes.
When Aryeh saw who had startled him, he carefully sheathed his sword, but his dark eyes clung to mine. They were filled with a fire, a need that reached out and grabbed my soul with its intensity. I realized now what it was that had driven him here and myself as well at almost exactly the same time. This was no random desire that could be slaked by just anyone. It was our need for each other that had brought us to this place, at this time. As he had been looming in my thoughts, I had apparently taken his captive as well.
It had started in the barn where White One had given birth, continued through our conversation earlier in the afternoon, and had peaked when Aryeh had rescued me from Sivah’s attentions. I had known then what was going on, what we were both feeling and experiencing, but had chosen, for very good reasons, to deny it.
I could not deny that wanting, that need, any longer.
Aryeh remained still. He would not make the first move, I knew. He knew what fate could befall him if he did.
The choice would be up to me.
