On the other hand, the gruff exterior of John Appleton hid a softer side. The author allowed him to slowly unfold into a man of gentleness. The lead characters were placed in a variety of situations that served to propel the story line forward, as well to give readers a glimpse of their multidimensional personalities. This is a sweet romance, focusing on the emotional, rather than the physical side of love. This was also in keeping with the restraints placed on courtship during this time in history. All of the secondary characters added depth to the plot. Each one was drawn with creativity and purpose. This reviewer has had the opportunity to read several books authored by Pamela Cummings. Her ability to blend history with fiction is a gift that provides readers with stories that engage them on several levels.
