"Why do you hate me so?" he blurted.
For a moment, she appeared taken aback. Then she said, "I don't hate you. I don't feel anything about you one way or the other." Her chin began to quiver and tears pooled in her eyes. "I just want you to go away."
"I am going away, Princess," Chaff murmured. Then his mouth formed words he hadn't thought he could say. "May I see you again when I return?"
"Oh, you are impudent!" she cried and raised her hand to slap him.
He caught her hand the instant before it touched his face. Hardly aware of his actions, he bent his head and gently kissed her fingertips...
