Amber shook off the sound. She thought she'd heard something. But the kid hadn't spoken a word.

"You know," Amber said, rubbing her temple, "these migraines are getting worse and worse."

Oh, the child's voice murmured. I wish you could.

Amber shifted her attention to the kid. Something danced up her spine when she first saw her. And it was prancing there now.

"She spends most of her time with her father," Annie said.

Only cuz you're worthless, Elita answered, although her lips hadn't moved.

"Mom wanted to show me where she works," she said aloud. "I guess this is it."

Amber flinched. "Well, yeah. Yeah, it is." She would not turn into a nutcase! She was not hearing things! "Come take a look in the back. We've just finished painting."

"Okay, sure." Stepping forward, the kid slipped her hand into Amber's.

Amber glanced down at the gesture, then shifted her gaze to the child's eyes. She gulped at the confusion she saw there.
