Amandus watched the woman across the room, feeling an unfamiliar heat burning in his belly. He bit back a growl as she tossed her head back and laughed at something her companion said. The restaurant was crowded to the point you couldn’t move without bumping into someone, but he swore he could pick out the sound of her husky laughter and the light floral scent of her perfume.

His nose twitched. He wanted that scent to deepen, become heavy with a mix of arousal and sex.

A waiter paused by the table. Amandus jerked his head, a sharp motion of dismissal. The waiter spun and went in the other direction.

Rising, Amandus leaned over, pulling the privacy drape half across the alcove’s entry. He could still see the woman, but the drawn curtain would warn others away. Satisfied that he wouldn’t be bothered again, Amandus returned his attention to the woman sitting at the bar. She held a drink in one hand. The fingers of her other played with the stirrer.
